Spikefest

In September and October 2003, to commemorate the first anniversary of Spike's death, Woy Woy hosted its very own Spikefest Comedy Festival.

The Spikefest Comedy Festival was born out of a community desire to celebrate not only Spike's humour by also his widespread involvement in the local community and commitment to a variety of local environment issues.

Spikefest was held again in 2004 and included such events as the Barefoot, Boardshorts and Bowls Day, the community Chest Comedy Gala black tie dinner as well as a wide variety of competitions, seminars and cultural tours.

A schedule of free workshops for kids has also been incorporated into the festival including theatre sports, comic writing, mask making, puppet making and cartooning.

The festival culminates with its biggest event, the Walking Backward to Woy Woy parade that now also includes a jazz concert.

When Jane Milligan arrived in Woy Woy for Spikefest in 2003, she said "It's a bit surreal... I've only just arrived... and I am on the back of a ute with my sister, going through the streets of Woy Woy with my father's false nose on and a silly hat, and just doing this walking backwards to Christmas thing. My Dad would have loved it."
