The daffodil story
One year, while in London and visiting Spike, Beverley
celebrated a birthday. Knowing she loved daffodils, Spike
told her he was going to cover her with the flowers.
"He said, 'It's your birthday, I'm going to cover you with
daffodils'. So he stopped the car in the middle of Marble
Arch in central London, we got out of the car, he lifted
me over the fence and we got into the middle of the daffodils,
[and he] said 'Sit down there', and here I was, he was just
pulling up armloads of daffodils and giving them to me.
I had daffodils everywhere.
"And then a policeman came over and he said, 'Hey, hey,
hey, you can't do that!... Out of there immediately or I'm
going to arrest you!' and Spike got up out of the daffodils
and said, 'But..It's me'. And he said, 'Oh, Spike, it's
you, don't worry.'
"[Then Spike asked] 'Would you take our photo? It's her
birthday,' and he said, 'Of course I will, of course I will'.
So here we are in the middle of this park, me covered with
daffodils... [and] this policeman's taking our photo. He
said, 'Now Spike, you really have to get out of there very
soon'. He said, 'Yes, yes, I will. Do you mind if I take
the daffodils?' He said, 'No, I'll walk the other way'.
So we filled the car up with the daffodils and off we went,
with just a narrow slit between the daffodils through which
you could see and he said, 'Spike, you're going to have
an accident one day. I can't see who you are, you can't
see.' Spike said, 'I can see perfectly well, Constable.
I can see out of this car and it's the only way I don't
keep running up people.'"
