Would you like to go to lunch?
Eric Sykes shared an office with Spike for almost 40 years:
"[The secretary]would knock and I'd say come in, and
she carried a letter, and it was in an envelope, and I opened
it up... and it was from Spike. It said 'Dear Eric, what
are you doing for lunch?'
"So I got my secretary and I [dictated] 'Dear Spike,
nothing. I've got to go to lunch somewhere, but I've no
idea where. Or when. Signed it, yours sincerely, Eric."
So she delivered it next door and there's a knock and another
letter.
"So I read it and it said 'Dear Eric, what about going
to Bertarelli's, which is across the road, about 1 o'clock?"
'Dear Spike, Bertarelli's sounds a very good idea. May I
remind you that it's your turn to pay, signed Eric.' [Then]
Spike burst it and he said 'well, are you coming?' I said
'1:30 we agreed'. He said 'no, now'. I said 'why?'. He said
'I'm running out of paper'.
