Looking Back

30 December 2000

Spike was awarded an honorary KBE. Prince Charles made a special request to bestow the knighthood because as a foreign subject it would normally be given by a representative of the Foreign Office. Spike went to St James Palace with Shelagh, Jane, Sile and Sile’s three sons. Spike could barely walk but stood up when Charles entered. He told Spike to sit down and he chatted to him with such kindness and sensitivity. When Shelagh told him he had been given a knighthood he simply said “Help!” but she believes he was "deeply pleased”.
