Looking Back

24 June 2002

Norma organised a memorial service for Spike at St Martin-in-the Fields. Eric Sykes was to be the host, but he was ill so Norma asked Michael Parkinson to be on stand-by. He did not hesitate to say yes. However, Eric made it to the service. Others who attended included Joanna Lumley, Peter O’Toole, Eddie Izzard and Stephen Fry. Barbara Dickson and Jane Milligan both sang at the service. (Jane sang “Alice”, a song written by Spike and Alan Clare which she sang again during the Woy Woy Spikefest). Norma also included a recording of Harry Secombe singing “Guide me O thou great redeemer” in honour of Spike’s fax which he sent to Harry when he was ill saying, “I hope you go before me because I don’t want you to sing at my funeral”.
