Looking Back

21 May 1951

The first recording of The Goon Show at BBC Variety headquarters. The programme was first called “Crazy People” but later changed to “The Goons Show”. Transmitted 6.45pm the next evening on the BBC Home Service. It received enthusiastic reviews: JP Thomas, the News Chronicle: “The Goons got away to a fine start on Monday with a slick and original 30 minutes which now needs the polish that experience will bring…”. Spike did not perform much in the beginning, believing his role was as writer and he could not compete with Harry and Peter as performers. His role as performer later increased and he took over and really developed the character of Eccles.
