One-man show in Dublin was a sell-out. He refused to go onstage but Norma urged him: “you can’t let the Irish down”. This struck a cord and he went on, raised his arms and yelled “I’ve come home”. The packed house erupted and he had a standing ovation before he started. He performed at the London Palladium just before Christmas but he was getting more and more unpredictable. After a poetry reading at Chichester when he forgot what he was doing and misjudged his timing and the length of time he was supposed to be on stage, Norma cancelled all future live performances. He was losing his memory and stopped asking Norma to organise more shows. After that he devoted his time to writing and to doing recordings of his books. He also made appearances for environmental and other causes.
