Looking Back

13 July 1890

Leo Alphonsus Milligan was born at No. 5 Holborn Street, Sligo, County Sligo, Ireland. The house is in the middle of an area which has an ancient military history dating back to the 17th Century. His father was William and his mother Elizabeth Higgins, also from Sligo. The name Milligan comes from O’Mealagain – they were working class Irish and Spike never pretended otherwise. The Milligan family moved to London where William worked in the theatre. Little Leo appeared in child walk-on roles and worked with Fred Karno’s Knockabout Kids, alongside an unknown boy called Charlie Chaplin. In his teens he was made to join the British army.
