When Spike was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Comedy Awards, Prince Charles sent a tribute. As it was being read out., Spike said “grovelling little bastard”. There was an uproar. The next day he sent Charles a telegram saying “I suppose a knighthood is out of the question.” According to one of his aides, Charles thought this was extremely funny. According to Shelagh, he sent back a telegram, saying “Just try a little gentle grovelling, Spike”.
