Looking Back

1 September 1964 - 30 September 1964

Spike was offered the title role of Oblomov in a play based on a little known Russian novel. He never really learned the lines but made the role his own with ad libs and sight gags and no two shows were ever the same. By December 1964, Son Of Oblomov was a big hit in London’s West End. During this run, the Queen, Prince Philip, Princess Margaret, Prince Charles and Princess Anne all went to see the show. He directed many jokes at the royal family and at the end of the show came forward with a sword and hinted: “if you want to knight me round the back afterwards.” After the show Spike and Paddy drove his Mini to Kensington Palace for what Princess Margaret described as "dinner with my sister".
