Call-up papers arrived and Spike joined the British Army in the Royal Artillery - D Battery in Bexhill-on-Sea - and his war adventures began, later chronicled in the 7 volumes of his war memoirs beginning with “Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall”.
