Looking Back

1 February 1984 - 28 February 1984

Prince Charles made the first of several visits to Monkenhurst for dinner. Spike reported that Charles was “always offering to wash up”. Spike and Shelagh made several visits to Highgrove, Charles’ country house and sometimes they stayed over. Spike said of Prince Charles and Diana: “they were a normal family with dogs running about and children. William and Harry came down in their pyjamas and Charles said ‘look Spike, would you like to sing The Ying-Tong Song for them’, and I had to sing this bloody song”. Once Spike forgot the words and Charles took over and “sang a scat version which left me helpless with laughter". Diana turned to me and said 'I don’t know what’s come over him'." Spike said “I don’t think the English people know what they’ve got on their hands. Charles would much rather be a clown and a joker, I think, than being the next king.”
