Spike toured his one-man show again in the UK but often cancelled shows and went into deep depression, locking himself in his room at Orme Court. Only Norma knew how to handle him during these periods. Spike said of his depressions: “It’s a gift and a curse. You get the pain much worse than anybody else, but you see a sunrise much more beautiful than anybody else” and “Early days, I had no control over it, but it’s like getting used to a hump on your back”.
