Spike dropped out of “Son of Oblomov” in early 1966 (due to depression). During one show, he began talking to the audience: “I’m starting to see double. The kids are asking at weekends: who’s that funny looking man? The wife’s wondering too. I’m not making enough money…” and so on. Several people including reporters walked out. He later wrote: “I’d slept with three leading ladies and I called the show off”.
