Spike was taken on as a clerk by a firm called Stones’ Engineering. The family’s arrival in England spelled the end of Leo and Flo’s performing careers and the end of luxury. In fact they lived in poverty and Spike had to help support the family through a series of dull, menial jobs. He joined a local dance-band and got his first gigs playing bass and then trumpet. He discovered jazz which brought him to life and remained a life-long love.
